A Health & Safety Policy is not only the requirement of any formalised Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS), but can also be a legal requirement depending on the size of an organisation. The policy needs to be established by Senior Management and formally approved before it is issued to relevant stakeholders.
It is important that the Health & Safety Policy is appropriate to the size of the company and the nature of their operations. When developing the policy, the activities of the organisation, as well as their products and services needs to be considered.
The policy needs to include commitment to fulfil legal requirements, eliminate hazards, reduce OH&S risks, continual improvement of the OHSMS and consultation and participation of workers.
The Health & Safety Policy is typically about one A4 page in length and good practice includes having the policy signed and dated by the management representative approving it.
Another aspect of the policy is, that it is used to communicate the organisations commitments to health & safety to its employees, customers, clients and other interested parties.
It can be beneficial to include the Health & Safety Policy on an organisations website, as it provides information on the organisations commitment to health & safety to all relevant stakeholders. It can additionally be communicated internally through employee inductions, internal briefings and on notice boards.
If an organisation has implemented an Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS) that need to be certified to ISO 45001, then they are required to have a documented Health & Safety Policy.
